DJ AM Passed Away In His New York Apartment On Friday August 28, 2009

Posted by ARNOLD YU on September 03, 2009.

Last Friday, August 28, 2009, the dance culture lost one of its most beloved and respected DJs of all time- DJ AM. Born Adam Goldstein, the young DJ was found dead in his New York apartment, from an apparent drug overdose.

Goldstein’s drug addiction began when he was younger, brought on by a difficult childhood, filled with memories of his abusive and cruel father. Although Adam went through rehab centers multiple times, and at one point allegedly attempted suicide, he began the road to recovery with the help of AA programs, and was clean for over 11 years until recently. Many attribute his recent depression to the post traumatic shock from his near fatal plane crash in September 2008.

Despite the DJ’s longstanding fight with drugs, Adam was loved by all and hated by none. He was close friends with Travis Barker of Blink 182, who is postponing shows to mourn the loss of DJ AM, whom he considered a brother to him.

The infamous DJ AM’s career began at the age of 20, when he began to DJ for celebrity night clubs, and before long, he had made a permanent name for himself in the Hollywood community. DJ AM collaborated on tracks with Jay Z, Papa Roach, Madonna, and Will Smith. He spun for private celebrity parties and also played every week at the PURE Night Club in Las Vegas for a year, and his most recent gig was being the regular DJ at the Rain Night Club at the Vegas Palms Casino. In addition to being a DJ at famous nightclubs, Adam managed the nightclub he co-founded, LAX.

Lastly, of course, we all remember DJ AM’s epic performance at the 2009 Electric Daisy Carnival Festival.

As a long standing symbol of strength and inspiration to not only the dance community, but those who struggle daily to overcome substance abuse, DJ AM will forever be respected and loved by all those who knew him. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing and hearing him spin live at Pure Night Club inside Caesars Palace, Las Vegas; he was absolutely amazing on the turntables and will be forever missed, rest in peace DJ AM!
